Do you ever wonder where the glass pipe or bong you've bought came from? If you got it at your local run of the mill head shop there is a good chance that it came from China. So what, you ask? Lots of shit it made in China..
Chinese factories are worried about their bottom line, they are in it for the money. This means using low quality materials for a lower production cost with a high resell and higher profits. Low quality glass is thinner, easier to crack or break, and is often warped. Glass that is coloured can be painted with who knows what kind of chemicals.. ick
Chinese factories are becoming notorious for ripping off designs from glass artists just check out the pictures below.
Hitman Glass just released the" Sundae Cup" and a company on DHGate has literally stole his design and his Instagram photos! Hitman Glass' designs have been ripped off dozens of times. They aren't the only company to be ripped off and unfortunately wont be the last.
Purchasing rip off China glass is doing these glass blowers a huge disservice!
When you purchase glass from independent artists or small production glass studios you are buying a piece of them, supporting them financially, showing support for their work, and helping them live their dream.. it's a powerful thing
I can only speculate on the conditions of a glass factory. But if they are anything like clothing factories then there are often deplorable working conditions, low wages, long days, no benefits, little safety precautions.. you know your basic slave labour.
Why buy domestic glass?
Supporting Individuals and the Economy
By purchasing glass that is made domestically your money is staying in your country and it's going to businesses, and artisans you're putting food on their table, a roof over their head, helping them raise a family. Tax collected is going to schools, hospitals, paving roads, helping your country operate.
You get higher quality glass (aka art), it functions better, feels better, looks better... there's all around more betterness.
Glass blowers are working on innovative designs, constantly trying to step up their game and challenge themselves.
When you buy something from China you are getting a little clone that has already been reproduced a million times before. Don't you want a one in a million glass piece? Not a one of millions?
You get a connection to the artist, businesses, and glass community when you avoid China glass.
Go on Instagram or any social media platform and you can join this community. The global cannabis community is filled with pot heads just like you!
How many great friendships have been formed while smoking from a bong or oil rig? ...Like all of them
I realize a lot of stoners can't afford heady glass pieces. I'll admit I have some glass that I purchased from a Canadian company that was manufactured in China.. it happens.
If you can't afford or don't want to spend "lots" of money on something to smoke out there are larger companies that mass produce glass domestically.
Do your homework, 'cause you don't want to be smoking out of some shitty thin, painted china glass. It's worth it to be paitent and save up to invest in a nice piece of glass
