If you're a pothead you know what 420 is, even if you aren't a toker I'm sure you've heard it before
"420, 4:20, or 4/20" according to Mr. Wikipedia is - a code term that refers to the consumption of cannabis and by extension, as a way to identify oneself with cannabis subculture or simply cannabis itself. Observances based on the number 420 include smoking cannabis around the time 4:20 pm on any given day, as well as smoking and celebrating cannabis on the date April 20th (4/20)
So where did 420 come from? Who started it?
There are many urban legends or myths surrounding the origins:
- Police Code for people in the process of consuming marijuana
- How many chemical compounds are in cannabis
- Tea Time in Holland
- April 20th is the best date to start a marijuana crop
- Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplins, Hitler's Birthday
- Bob Marley's Death
- All of thee above is complete bull shit
The most agreed upon explanation for the origins of 420 is as follows
The year- 1971, location- San Rafael California, the time- 4:20pm. A group of friends who called themselves the "Waldos" would meet at a statue of Louis Pasteur located on the school grounds of San Rafael High School. After meeting at 4:20pm they would adventure off to find an abandoned cannabis crop and obviously smoke weed- their code work for this activity was 420 Louis. Unfortunately the crop was never found but the group of friends continued using 420 (dropping the Louis) for "secret" code of getting high.
Flash forward to 2015 code 420 is now used throughout the world to represent anything related to the cannabis culture and still as a code word for getting high.
It has also turned into a holiday April 20th a wonderful day that we gather together to celebrate an amazing culture and plant!
As I write this we are just over two weeks away from 4/20, this is my 3rd year helping organize and host a get together in my home town. If there's an event being held in your city be sure to show up and toke your support for cannabis and its legalization. If there isn't an event in your city consider hosting one! Its a good way to socialize with fellow potheads and give back to the marijuana community.
